STILL CONFLICTING OPINIONS ON CAUSE OF JEFF'S DEATH 19/01/2012.......The widow of a former Notts County and England footballer has said The FA has never accepted how the game contributed to her husband's death. Jeff Astle, who also played for West Bromwich Albion during the 1960s and 1970s, died 10 years ago.A coroner ruled that the 59-year-old had suffered brain damage caused by heading heavy leather footballs. The FA said "conflicting opinions" remained on the possible effects of heading a football over time. Laraine Astle, from Netherseal, in Derbyshire, said: "I don't think they [The Football Association] want to hold their hands up and own up that the game that we loved proved to be a killer. "Jeff died because he was a prolific header of the ball, no one has come near since. He scored more than half of his goals with his head. “There are now standards set out in the laws of the game for the size, weight and pressure of footballs and other medical issues. "Most of the time it was with the big heavy leather balls that when wet, gained water and were three and a half times heavier. In bad weather it used to freeze solid." Mrs Astle said she and her three daughters had been unsuccessful in their bid to win compensation from The FA, despite the coroner's report. An FA spokesperson said: "There remain conflicting opinions on the possible effects of frequent heading of a football over time. "There are now standards set out in the laws of the game for the size, weight and pressure of footballs and we will continue to liaise with FIFA on this and other medical issues. "Jeff Astle was a fine footballer and many fans will remember the great service he gave throughout his career, both to club and country." Jeff Astle started his career at Notts County, scoring 31 goals in 103 league appearances before moving to West Bromwich Albion in 1964. He won his first England international call-up in 1969 and was picked for the 1970 World Cup squad in Mexico. 25 YEARS OF LIFELINE CELEBRATED 16/09/2011.......Ten former Notts players were guests at Meadow Lane on Thursday 15th September for a gala dinner to celebrate - to the day - the 25th anniversary of Lifeline, the club's successful fund-raising scheme.
The party was led by Steve Sims, the Notts captain when Lifeline was launched. Steve is pictured above (far left) with Brian Bates, Phil Turner and Notts manager Martin Allen. Speaking to a packed 1862 Suite, Steve recalled the evening at the Astoria Ballroom in Nottingham when hundreds were locked out and over 1,000 who managed to gain admission signed up to Lifeline there and then. Jimmy Sirrel did not explain to the players exactly what was going to happen on the night - but Steve said they guessed it was something special when they found Tommy Lawton was also there. The other former players who joined the gala night were Don Masson, Phil Turner, Les Bradd, Iain McCulloch, Brian Stubbs, Steve Cherry, David Hunt, Gerry Carver and Brian Bates. Brian Stubbs and Les Bradd are pictured left in conversation with Martin Allen. Les made presentations to Pat Worthington who retires shortly after 32 years in the club's conference and banqueting office and to Bernard and Mavis Greally who joined Lifeline on day one and who were celebrating their golden wedding. A special presentation was also made to NCFPA President, Colin Slater MBE (pictured right), who acted as MC both on the first night and again on this 25th anniversary and who received an inscribed glass plate from John Mounteney, the club's former vice chairman and long-time supporter. ![]() Far left, Steve Sims, David Hunt and Gerry Carver enjoy the Lifeline festivities, while two former QPR players meet as Martin Allen greets Notts legend Don Masson. Receiving the Trophy from Sandra Mann, Arthur's widow (and pictured left with Arthur's daughter Georgina), he spoke of his deep affection for the Meadow Lane club and recalled some of the good players he'd either played with or managed. He continues to watch Notts play whenever possible. Finishing on 40 points, Charlie held off a strong challenge from former goalkeeper - and now Centre of Excellence director - Mick Leonard on 39 points, with Dean Yates and Brian Bates level on 35 points each in third place. Thanks were expressed to Les Bradd and Brian Bates for the smooth organisation which ensured the day went without a hitch. Proceedings concluded with a meal at which the various prizes were presented. Les won the "Nearest the Pin" prize; the best four ball went to Ian McParland, Nigel Jemson, Jack Oldershaw and Ken Heseltine with a score of 130; Don Masson and Chris Frake, on 83 points, were the best pair; and Chris Frake's 48 won for him the Best Guest score. Those competing for the first time, and to whom a special welcome was extended, were former players Phil Turner and Dave Harbottle; former club officials Steve Parkin and Alan Hill; and the former Manchester City and England goalkeeper Joe Corrigan, a guest of Neil Mann. HELPING HAND FOR FORMER PLAYERS THROUGH OUR BENEVOLENT FUND Remember - a helping hand is always there for any of our former players who might need it, courtesy of the Notts County Former Players’ Association Benevolent Fund. The fund was set up in 2009 and has already proved beneficial to several of our members. It was launched with a bucket collection at the home game against Aldershot in season 2009-10, which topped £2,000 and has been considerably boosted by kind donations from Club Life President and former Chairman, Derek Pavis, and long-time sponsor and supporter Joy Sharpe, on behalf of Hillside Medical Supplies of Newark. A sub-committee has been set up to administer the fund - including all-time top scorer Les Bradd, who commented: "We believe it is a long overdue development for the Association. Our main activities are the Annual Dinner and Golf Competition, which bring people together from all sorts of far flung places to relive some great days at Meadow Lane, but the feeling among committee members is that we need to look beyond that. “The Benevolent Fund gives us the chance to reach out a helping hand to those former players who need one." Anybody willing to make a further donation is asked to write to cheque made payable to the NCFPA Benevolent Fund and send it to: Don Masson, The Grange, Sutton Lane, Elton, Notts.
