Iain McCulloch

December 28, 2015

On this day Iain McCulloch was born. In April 1978 he became Notts County's record signing when he signed from Kilmarnock for £80,000. He scored two goals on his debut against West Ham on the 19th August 1978 and went on to score 18 goals in his first two seasons with the club in the old Division Two. He ended the season 1979/80 as the clubs top goalscorer. Iain formed a formidable partnership with Trevor Christie and together they fired Notts into Divison One, Christie scoring 14 goals and Iain 11 goals as they clinched promotion at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea.

In their first game in Division One Notts faced Champions Aston Villa at Villa Park who paraded the league Trophy before the game, Notts were not overawed and in front of a gate of  30,097 Notts went onto win 1-0 with Iain scoring a superb goal. Iain ended up scoring 16 goals from 40 appearances including a hat-trick away at W.B.A.  Christie also scored 12 goals from 35 appearances continuing their form from Division Two.  Notts finished that season 15th defying the bookies tip to go down and finished the following season also in the same position with Iain scoring 10 goals from 34 appearances. The following season in 1983/84 proved to be his last when he suffered a badly broken leg in a collision with goalkeeper Gary Bailey against Manchester United which proved to be the end of his career. Iain made a total of 215 League appearances scoring a total of 51 goals.

In 2014 Iain was presented with the Former Players’ Association Achievement Award at their 16th Annual Dinner.  We woud like to wish Iain many happy returns on his Birthday.
