Today sees former Notts County player Dean Yates's 50th Birthday, Dean joined Notts from Syston Juniors where he started as a centre forward and then as a midfielder before turning to centre back. He made his debut on the 6th April 1985 in a 3-2 home defeat against Wimbledon playing alongside Dave Watson and Pedro Richards and held his place for the rest of the season. The following season he held the number 5 spot which he made his own and scored his first league goal again Bolton in a 1-0 win. Dean quickly became recognised as one of the best central defenders outside of Division One and went on to make an incredible 314 league appearances scoring 33 goals. Unfortunately in 1992 he suffered a severe knee injury that kept him sidelined for just over two years. He later moved on to Derby County for a fee of £350,000 and helped them to promotion in the 1995/96 season making 38 appearances and scoring two goals. He also was named their "Player of the Year". His last move was to Watford in 1998 where he suffered further injuries and retired shortly after his 31st Birthday making 12 appearances and scoring once.
