Tickets about to go on sale for former players’ celebration of promotion triumph

Probably the greatest of all Notts County’s promotion successes, which took the club into the top flight of the English game in 1981, after a 55-year absence, will be celebrated at the annual dinner of the Former Players’ Association.

This will take place at Meadow Lane on Saturday evening 6 April, following a League One fixture with Northampton Town.

Tickets at £35 each will go on general sale this Saturday and will be available from the Meadow Lane ticket office.

Fifteen of the players from the 1980-81 campaign having already confirmed their attendance it is expected there will be a big demand for places.

One of the players, former Yugoslavian international goalkeeper Raddy Avramovic, will be flying to Britain from the Far East for a reunion with his former Notts colleagues. In four seasons at Meadow Lane he made 149 appearances.

Another player who helped Notts to promotion, and will be present, is Eddie Kelly. The former Arsenal championship and FA Cup winner spent just the promotion campaign at Meadow Lane with 26 appearances.

The evening’s special guest will be Howard Wilkinson, part of the club’s managerial set-up at the time, working alongside the legendary manager, the late Jimmy Sirrel.

It will be a specially poignant occasion for skipper Don Masson who completed a record of three promotion successes as Notts captain when Notts finished second in Division Two, earning an automatic rise into the top flight.

This was followed by two successful seasons against the game’s elite, Notts finishing 15th on each occasion, and the celebration dinner will also mark these successes. Notts were relegated at the end of the third year at the top.
